An Afternoon in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is Jackie’s hometown. Over the last few descades, we’ve spent a slew of time in the Steel City, and over those decades, we’ve seen many of the tourist sites.

We once spent an afternoon touring the stadiums down by the river. First stop was the home of the Steelers, Acrisure Stadium (nee Heinz Field) and then PNC Park, the home of the Pirates. They were high up on the list because Jackie bleeds Black and Gold.

We’ve also hit the museums and the Universities, the Zoo, the three rivers, and historical sites, distilleries and more. All of those places were cool, but on this trip, we literally had a few hours. So we hit up two of our old standbys… old being the key word.

First stop was the Duquesne Incline, which started operating in 1877 as a transportation hub for local blue collar workers. The incline is primarily a tourist destination now but the tram that scales the steep Mt. Washington still operates much as it did nearly 150 tears ago. We parked in the pay parking dirt lot at the lower station and hiked up to the station. The round trip fare is $3.50.

At the top station, there’s a small but interesting historical museum about the incline and the area. Once outside the station, you are rewarded with fantastic views of downtown, the three rivers and more than a dozen steel bridges. It’s not the most tourist friendly place as there are no restrooms, and the only payment accepted is exact cash, but we love revisiting the place.

Our second spot is our favorite lunch spot in the city… ok, it’s Jackie’s favorite spot. We drove the few miles to the Strip District where we visited the original Primanti Brothers location. The restaurant has been a Pittsburgh institution for 90+ years, since 1933. The company has a handful of area locations, but this is the original.

The walls are covered with colorful local art, and the tiny restaurant is always packed. It absolutely reeks with local flavor, both literally and figuratively. Their claim to fame? Sandwiches served with French fries and coleslaw piled high between your protein of choice and some delicious fresh bread. It’s one of those infamous eateries that lives up to the hype.
